On?Chip Mercury?Free Deep?UV Light?Emitting Sources with Ultrahigh Germicidal Efficiency

In the current COVID-19 scenario, there is an urgent need for developing efficient and mercury-free deep-ultraviolet (deep-UV) light sources disinfection applications. AlGaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) may be considered as alternative, but due to their inherent low efficiencies in deep-UV spectral region, significant developments are required address efficiency issues. Here, a chip-size source shown which enabled by high-vacuum chip-scale cavity sealing overcoming limitations of both mercury lamps LEDs. These chips cathodoluminescence based, created with high vacuum integrity field-emission. demonstrate optical output power ?20 mW (efficiency ?4%) and, owing overlap phosphor spectra germicidal effectiveness curve, resulted log 6 (99.9999%) efficiency. Additionally, these offer reliability, “instant” ON/OFF capability, operational lifetimes, low-temperature dependence complete design freedom.
